The New Apple CarPlay

In the latest WWDC conference, Apple unveiled their new plans for CarPlay. For the first time ever CarPlay will be able to also mirror information on the cluster. Previously limited to only infotainment displays. This makes sense, since cars are having more and more screens added to them each year.

From this to actually work in a vehicle there are a few things that needs to be in order

1. The CarPlay software would need to add additional interfaces for fetching vehicle related information so that it can be relayed back to the iPhone and then can be rendered back on to the cluster display.

2. The CarPlay implementation should allow rendering to both driver and infotainment displays. This can be tricky depending on what architecture each OEM has chosen to go for.

3. Typically warnings that you show the driver vary in importance and criticality. The CarPlay interface would have to handle the same level of safety features.

4. Integration with driver controls. Different OEMs have different kinds of driver controls to manipulate and they have to be standardized.

5. Display screen adaptability. Apple has promised their new CarPlay will work with all kinds of displays. OEMs use all kinds of displays with different size, resolution, refresh rates etc.
